Luna's Paper Designs
Tucson-based Artist Sandy Luna recreates the beautiful flora of the desert with her paper designs.
Growing up in Mexico City meant being surrounded by flowers and greenery, so it was a bit of a culture shock coming to the desert. It took a little while, but soon she began to see the beauty of the desert plants.
“I started liking the desert flowers…the way they bloom and it’s not just the dry plants that you see.”
What she loves the most and what she tries to incorporate into her paper creations is the color and texture. She does her best to recreate what she sees in the wild.
“I consider myself a paper crafter, but in a unique way to make the most realistic flowers as possible.”
What started as just a hobby quickly became a business and now Sandy is teaching others how to create paper flowers themselves.
One of the most important aspects of starting a new artistic project is having the flowers in front of her. She takes time to open the flowers to see what’s inside.
“I like the structure of the flowers. I dissect the flowers when I can…for a perfect flower you have to open it up and see how it’s built inside.”
Her latest project is finding the plants that are extinct and, in a way, bringing them back to life.
“I want to bring all of those plants so people can appreciate them and see them as real as they can look…”
