Portraits: Amy Whitworth, Landscape Designer
Gardens are a little piece of nature that we get to enjoy even in a more urban environment. Landscape designers have their work cut out for them as they strive to create spaces that both feel wild, but also like coming home.
Growing up outside in Long Island, New York, Landscape Designer Amy Whitworth has always had a deep connection to nature. The art aspect of her job came a little later only because she wasn’t sure how to combine her two passions.
“I’m really glad that I didn’t just study horticulture and didn’t get the art side because now I’m working with the earth, I’m creating beauty and art outside…”
What makes Amy’s designs stand out among other designers is what she calls “naturalistic landscapes.” She stresses the importance of designing spaces that mimic the way untouched landscapes look and feel.
Amy hopes her designs will make people feel connected to nature in their gardens. It’s about art, but it’s also about making people feel at home even in the wildness.
“I see my job as a designer to connect people more to the natural world…we’re so disconnected, but we still feel a really strong, gut pul to the natural world.”
