Portraits: Rick Laughlin, Landscape Designer

When designing a landscape for a client, it’s important as a designer to connect your own perspectives while also catering to the desires of the client.

For Landscape Designer Rick Laughlin, creating the dream landscape for his clients is more important than his own perspective of the space.

“I adhere to the time-proven principles of landscape design, but I gather in the clients’ wishes and needs and I weigh those heavily in my design because I’m designing for the client, not for myself.”

He’s found that curating an extraordinary space for the clients is the gateway to successful landscape design.

“Their wants and desires are key to pulling off a good design.”

By taking into consideration the clients’ favorite colors and what the space is going to be best used for, Rick’s designs ensure a creative and functional landscape.

Rick enjoys creating unique spaces like designing a more tactile landscape for a client who is colorblind. Besides the visual beauty, it’s all about the feel, and also the fragrance in his landscapes

“I also use a lot of fragrant plants like chocolate flower…lavender, the peonies. Those are some of my favorites.”
