PlantPop NYC: "Wildman" Steve Brill
PlantPop NYC is a segment of PlantPop. We hired a young filmmaker from New York, Stephen Farris, to go find cool plant stories in his neighborhood.
There’s a lot that people don’t know about the plants growing around them. The weeds that home gardeners try to fight every year may actually be defeated simply by eating them. Before you head outside and eat a random weed, though, you’ll need to consult a professional.
“Wildman” Steve Brill is the foraging expert.
Even though Steve hasn’t had any formal training, his years of trial-and-error and study have grown his knowledge and made him an expert in identifying plants in the wild.
The lessons that he shares with people who tour with him or read his work, are incredibly invaluable. By sharing the knowledge he has about plants, he’s helping to connect people to the natural world and helping them understand what plants they can and cannot eat or use.
Steve’s foraging tours go through parks and nearby woods and Steve is often accompanied by his teenage daughter, Violet. The goal of these tours is to help people get in touch with nature.
The tours often have a degree of humor to them, so the time spent will be both informative and amusing.
