Becca Calhoun: Houseplant Collector
Plants are like constant companions and they require a lot from their owners. Learning how to care for plants is like learning a new subject in school, it takes time and practice.
Being a student was such a huge part of Becca Calhoun’s life that she found herself a little lost after graduating.
“I didn’t know what my purpose in life was anymore because I really prided myself on being a student and now that I wasn’t that, what was I? So I became a plant collector.”
For her, creating her plant collection has been a labor of love. Every new plant presents new challenges on how to keep it alive and thriving.
“I’m a forever student now that I have houseplants.”
As with any type of collector, Becca certainly has her favorites. There was one plant she had been wanting since she first started her plant collection, Calathea orbifolia. Now that she’s acquired it and has learned how to keep it happy, she takes extra special care of it, maybe more than any other plant or even herself.
“She drinks better water than I do.”
It’s not just about filling her house with plants or even about the plant-parenting trend that keeps Becca collecting. It’s the challenge and the opportunity to learn more that keeps her motivated.
“It takes time and it takes a lot of effort.”
It helps, too, that she’s created a following on social media where other plant collectors can collaborate and share tips.
