Laura Garcia Serventi: Artist
Every artist has a story to tell, whether it’s through the subject matter or the use of color. For many artists, it’s about sharing a piece of themselves with every piece of artwork they create.
Artist Laura Garcia Serventi creates both large and small-scale paintings of plants she loves. She grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she was constantly surrounded by beautiful plants. Her interest in art stemmed from the influence of her grandfather.
“My grandfather was a painter and I spent a lot of time at his house…in my childhood, I spent a lot of time among plants.”
If it wasn’t her grandparents’ home, which was filled with plants, Laura spent many afternoons in the plant shop next door.
Laura’s style of painting reflects the unpredictability of nature. She might go in with a general plan on a piece she’s working on, but ultimately she doesn’t know where it will end up.
“I have no idea what the colors are going to be…I build up as I paint and I really don’t know how it’s going to end.”
Her range of plant paintings are varied, from succulents to cacti to tropical plants. It really shows that Laura doesn’t really have any favorites.
“I really like every single plant, I just can’t choose one.”
She hopes that other city-dwellers like her can find their own piece of the outside to bring in. She describes her artwork like a small part of the natural world.
“I hope that it’s a little window to the wild…a little piece of nature inside of the home.”
