In Frame
Lacie Porta, a Brooklyn-based artist, has always been interested in pressing flowers, ever since she was little. This love is what motivated her to start her company Framed Florals, where she makes art out of pressed flowers.
“I love flowers in general. I love fresh flowers. But I think what is different for me is when I see fresh flowers, I can kind of picture...what they would look like dried and pressed and in a frame.”
For Lacie, her flower preservation artwork isn’t just about how pretty flowers are, but making unique keepsakes for people.
“It goes much further into preserving actual memories. Each flower holds something that’s really special.”
Being based in Brooklyn gives her great opportunities, not only because she gets to browse all of the different shops in the flower district for fresh flowers, but also because it allows her to realize just how special her work is.
“The city itself is so fast-paced. It is so quick, and the process that I do is so slow...You can’t speed it up, and it really just focuses on slowing down.”
Although the process is long, Lacie has come to really appreciate how working with preserved flowers has helped her pace herself, and she hopes that it can do the same for others.
“Working with pressed flowers has really taught me to slow down and be more mindful and just appreciate the little things, and so I hope that when my clients work with me they get a chance to do that too.”
