Hort & Pott

In 2017, partners Todd Carr and Carter Harrington took a leap of faith in founding a botanical design studio in upstate New York. Since then, their business Hort & Pott has attracted plenty of attention for its nostalgic atmosphere, curated vintage finds, and handcrafted seasonal wreaths and floral arrangements.

Todd has a history of working with plants in many contexts, from garden design to floristry to crafting.

“I always like to say, I've been doing this sort of thing since I was a child, creating worlds and giving people experiences, whether that's just creating gardens and doing that for clients…or making concrete pots and creating little plant worlds inside of them.”

While Todd specializes in the botanical side, Carter’s background is in architecture. This skillset has allowed him to focus on the other key part of the design process, creating containers for Todd’s arrangements, and other ornamental pieces for gardens.

“When you make pots and things that are actually holding these living organisms as vessels, or as containers, it kind of activated a new sense of appreciation for what the forms could do.”

Even though Todd has been experimenting with different ways of creating pieces for Hort & Pott for years now, he’s still constantly finding new ways to innovate.

“Every single time I go out in the gardens or around the meadows, I always feel like I discover something…something that I never thought of to incorporate in an arrangement.”

Plants became a strong connection point for Todd and Carter. Even though he used to be more neutral towards plants, Carter has grown to love them and find his own appreciation for them through Hort & Pott.

“I love what he does with them. Can't imagine life without tons of gorgeous, crazy wild plants, all over the place.”

Hort & Pott’s creations are a beautiful collaboration between Todd and Carter, taking elements from both of their backgrounds to make one unified piece that brings happiness to both them and their customers.

“This is what really brings me a lot of joy is creating these vignettes and these worlds, and it's incorporating his work with the concrete and then the live plant material…it just weaves something together that brings me the ultimate joy. And I'm not even thinking about business at this point. It's just, that's what I do.”
