Christopher Carroll: Artist
Art can be a guide for us to learn in unique ways. Christopher Carroll admits that he doesn’t have extensive plant knowledge, but through his artwork, he is able to observe and learn about them just by being immersed in these natural spaces.
“A lot of what I'm doing as an artist is trying to learn more about my backyard, but I'm also trying to tell the story… to other people.”
He believes that these stories and oral histories surrounding plants are vital to our culture, so he wants to explore those meanings through his work.
“So we know these things internally, but we don't talk about them and we don't show them. So on a surface level, I am exploring that.”
Christopher strives to create a story through his art. He builds up all of the pieces he’s gathered, portraying them as close to how they’d grow naturally as he can, so he can authentically capture a moment in time.
“As an artist, I do have a relationship with these things and I want to encourage that. And all it takes is the willingness to meet them halfway.”
