Morrita de las Plantas

We might not think of working with plants as an act of rebellion, but for Sofía Filio, it was a way for her to break the mold of the career paths that her family had chosen.

“...all my family are artists, singers, announcers, so I wanted to do something completely different, something like the rebel in the family.”

Sofía’s background is in agriculture, so she became the person that everyone would come to for plant advice. While she was able to help, her work was never focused on houseplants. It wasn’t until the pandemic that she decided to delve into the world of interior plants.

“I knew everyone was stuck between four walls, so I started recording what I used to do in the field, but directed to be done at home, at an apartment or any small space.”

Through making videos about plant care, Sofía went through a lot of trial and error. But she doesn’t see the plants that died as failures. She finds the loss as something relatable for all plant owners, so it became a means of connection.

It’s important to her that her videos are accessible for everyone. They aren’t lectures that use detailed terminology; they are fun guides for every level of plant parent.

“I wanted to make it fun so if a child sees it, they can learn as well. If they watch a fun video that is also teaching, I think it’s a great combination.”
