Nolan Anderson: Florist & Filmmaker

Flowers can have an impact on many aspects of life and for some people, flowers unexpectedly influence the day-to-day job.

For Filmmaker Nolan Anderson, flowers have been a part of his life since he was young.

“I was a really little kid and I used to grow tulips in the yard with my mom.”

He says his first foray into floristry was in high school when he was looking for good bouquets and corsages for prom. Not finding suitable options, he’d create his own from several different bunches of flowers.

While being a florist is only a part-time job for him, Nolan has found that the work has inspired his filmmaking.

“I learned more about short filmmaking by playing with flowers and flower arrangements than I did in film school.”

He says it’s about creating a mood or tone when he’s putting together arrangements. He finds as he’s putting different flowers together to create a piece, he’s creating a story. In his short-filmmaking, he rarely has enough time to develop characters or tell anything deep, so it all comes down to the tone.

“It all comes back to story-telling.”
