Maria Cecilia Serafino: Florist & Artist

Scultura Fiori is a multi-generational business. The current owner, Maria Cecilia Serafino isn’t completely sure how far back it goes, but she does know that her grandfather’s investment in her as a child changed her life.

“When my brother and I were kids, my grandfather used to teach us how to properly cut and plant leaves in the soil so that a new plant could grow, or how to grow plants from seeds.”

It might seem strange that two young kids would enjoy the labor of planting, but it really was something special for Maria.

“Helping him was the most exciting thing for us because we felt like we were part of the company from a very early age.”

Due to the amount of time she spent in the shop with her family and surrounded by greenery and flowers, she has found that she has a way of communicating with plants. She always knows when they need a drink or attention.

“Probably because we grew up together, I think I’ve always had a deep connection with plants.”

In her design elements, she always strives to speak through the medium of plants, using the flowers to tell the story of whatever event she’s designing for. She has to be on her toes, though, willing to make a change if a flower or something else inspires her.

“Flowers are always in charge, because I may have a composition in mind, but then I come across little elements that aren’t as expected, like the shape of a branch, or a peculiar leaf, and I just want to enhance their value and display their uniqueness.”
