Bryan Ramsey: Garden Designer

Garden design is about properly representing a client’s character and viewpoint while also sharing the designers’ aesthetic.

For Bryan Ramsey of Bryan Ramsey Design in Norfolk, designing a garden is about artistry as well as functionality.

Bryan’s interest in plants began at an early age, growing up going to his grandparents’ farm in North Carolina.

“My grandmother especially kind of started centering my focus towards plants…I can remember the farm itself was so magical, but especially having her there and seeing all the myriad of color…”

When it came time to find a career focus, he initially was drawn to architecture because of his drawing ability and interest in designing, but he quickly realized that wasn’t quite the direction he wanted to go in.

At the University of North Carolina, he found an offering of landscape design and horticulture to study and jumped at the chance to combine two of his passions.

“It gave me the best of both worlds. It gave me all the design that I really craved and then it gave me the balance of full-on horticulture.”

Bryan has been designing and helping people create the green spaces of their dreams for over twenty years. He has also had opportunities to share his knowledge on the small screen with HGTV and The Design Network. His charisma and overall joy for plants are infectious along with the banter between him and his identical twin brother, Kevin, in Backyard Staycation.
