Heather Bentz: Contemporary Abstract Artist
For those who have never traveled to the southwest, it can be a total shock to the senses. For Contemporary Abstract Artist Heather Bentz, it was a wake-up call and a muse for her artwork.
“This is the first time I’ve lived in the desert. I’ve lived in a lot of different places, but the desert is extreme and surprising in many ways.”
She describes how the colors at first were so surprising to her, the vibrant desert landscape palette and unique shapes of the plants have been highly impactful in her art. In fact, the desert reminds her of a beloved author who also had a penchant for peculiarity.
“I feel like living here in the desert is like being in a Dr. Suess book… there are so many strange-shaped plants that it’s like ‘This is awesome!’”
Heather’s incredible sense of wonder and curiosity drives her work ethic. Her work is indicative of her imagination and playfulness while also being grounded in the reality of her space.
One thing that she never tires of is her desire to make something new, whether it’s a different art medium, a new muse, or just a new way of looking at her surroundings. While staying true to her voice as an artist, she never shies away from a challenge.
“I have no idea if this is going to work, but I want to go and see. I want to try…I love the risk.”
