Lucy Schmidt: Illustrator & Muralist
Most artists tend to view their work as something everlasting, something permanent. But Lucy Schmidt, a UK born muralist based in Berlin, acknowledges that her art, much like nature, is ephemeral.
Ever since she was a child, she’s had an interest in art over anything else.
“My parents said I was not so interested in dolls or anything like that. I just wanted a pen and a coloring book.”
Berlin has endless seeds of inspiration for Lucy’s art.
“My works tend to take some time because I'm stopping every 10 seconds to take photos or I'm sending a voice message and I have to say, “‘Wait one second. I’ve just seen a nice flower.’”
We typically think of murals as art that will stay around for a long time, but since Lucy does work inside of spaces like her own home, she knows that they won’t be around forever.
She finds this similar to the changing of seasons and the natural life cycle of the very flowers that she takes inspiration from.
“There's maybe something wrong with me, but I find some kind of like, sick, twisted joy in, like spending hours painting something that... beautiful. And then I paint over it white and it's gone.”
