Friðheimar

A few years ago, Josh Wingard had the opportunity to visit Iceland and interview Knútur Ármann about Friðheimar. He recently had the chance to return and revisit Knútur at the farm.

Friðheimar started out as a venture to have a greenhouse and raise horses. Along the line, they decided to make the farm open to the public so that people could learn more about how they grow their tomatoes in Iceland’s climate.

“What I really care about is, as a farmer, to have that opportunity to spread knowledge, because in our stories we are spreading knowledge everyday.”

They started out growing a variety of produce, but eventually switched to just planting their favorite: tomatoes.

“We really like the plant, and if you like the plant you can also be good in it and try to be known on the market for good quality tomatoes.”

People often comment how lucky Knútur is to be able to do what he is most passionate about.

“You really need to be passionate to be around the people to spread knowledge if you are going to be able to do it. And I'm so lucky I have passion for or all of this for the plants, for the horses, and also for our guests.”
