Luzia Simons: Scanogram Artist
Wherever our life journeys take us, one of the things that will always be present is plants. Artist Luzia Simons was born in Brazil and currently works in Berlin, so she knows this fact well.
“In the fairs of Europe it is something that is always there. There are the flowers that we buy every weekend.”
After moving to Europe, Luzia had to learn to adapt to the changing seasonality of flowers, as opposed to the tropical plants she was used to. She believes that growing up around those vibrant plants is part of what drew her so strongly to florals.
“From the tropics I think I have a certain sun that I have kept that allows me an expression of colors that allows me a more exuberant, in a way, connection to plants.”
Photographing and scanning flowers is a delicate process. It requires Luzia to work faster than her plants can start wilting, but capturing these momentary states of the flowers and freezing them in time makes it worth the effort.
“I think that the story of perpetuating on paper…The problem of the ephemeral, of everything that will disappear.”
