Laura Wooten: Landscape Artist

Laura Wooten is a landscape artist that takes inspiration from places as simple as her own backyard. She feels that painting is a way to engage with the natural world and convey that experience to others.

“As a landscape painter and a painter of nature, it's more than what I'm seeing. It's what I'm hearing, what I'm feeling, and that whole experience of being outside…”

One of Laura’s most memorable landscapes she’s been inspired by was from the yard of her childhood home. The beauty of the everchanging flora filled her with wonder that got her hooked on plants.

“We would anticipate the blooming of the dogwood in the springtime, and we would anticipate the forsythia being one of the first things that would bloom in the early spring.”

That trend continued for Laura in her current home, but this time the memories that she sees passing through the landscape over time are those of her son growing up.

She feels as though all the trees and plants hold those memories as they’ve been there through every stage of his life.

“I think about the different stages of his life and when we would take pictures of him as a little child in the yard, and then before you know it, we're taking a prom picture in the yard, and then his graduation picture in the yard.”
