Alessia Resta: Apartment Botanist
Plants, like people, are all different and require different care. A plant that works for one space and one person might not thrive in someone else’s care.
Successful houseplant parents aren’t born overnight and plantfluencers like Apartment Botanist Alessia Resta want people to understand that it’s not always easy.
“I collect over 200 plants in my New York City space.”
Getting to this level of collecting requires a lot of patience and a lot of research to know how to provide the right environment because of course plants will survive best outside so finding the right way to use the tools we have requires a lot of trial and error sometimes.
“I wanted to…really understand where this plant is from, what its natural habitats were…”
Alessia’s plant collection isn’t all the so-called easy to find and easy to care for variety, though. Her real passion is the plants that are a little more challenging to find.
Rather than keep her knowledge to herself, Alessia uses social media to track her own progress and to share with others who might be interested in rare plant collecting. She never expected what she’s gotten in return, though.
“What it ended up bringing was actually real-life friends through that and I ended up finding, surprisingly enough, a community…”
Her plant community is one of encouragement and sharing experiences. She’s been able to develop lifelong friendships with other people who love plants as much as she does.
