Sara Abalan: Visual Artist

Even before Sara could talk, she was drawn to creating art and drawn to nature. After working in New York for over two decades, she moved out to Florida and realized just how much she missed being surrounded by green.
“It hit me like a ton of bricks that this is my subject matter.”
Sara’s work emphasizes capturing trees and their foliage, focused on finding plants that have interesting forms and lines to try to capture.
“The paintings are like collages of memory. It’s the shapes of things, it’s the compositions that are created just looking through the branches of trees.”
Much like how plants change with the seasons, Sara’s pieces go through an intense evolution from conception to the final product - but for her, not fully knowing what it will end up looking like is part of the excitement of creating.
“It’s kind of like a dance between me and my subject matter and paint.”
