Katie Dunkle: Austin Artist

The impact that flowers and the natural world have on people varies, but the majority of people experience positivity and calmness when surrounded by beautiful plants.

For Austin-based artist, Katie Dunkle, nature and plants are all about connection.

“Everyone in a way has a connection to nature…when people see something that they connect with they automatically want to be closer to it.”

She takes great joy in experiencing nature. Whether it’s her own garden or one of the National Parks, she enjoys getting to experience the different plants and flowers.

“I love studying them, I take photos, and then I work from there.”

It’s not just about the inspiration that plants bring to her artwork, it’s the overall relaxing experience of being outdoors that has the biggest impact on her life and work.

“Plants have a direct connection to my livelihood. It takes a lot of focus and attention to start a new painting so I often like to step outside to recharge my artist soul and refuel my desire to get back into the studio.”

Katie loves to travel and through her adventures with her husband driving across the country, she came up with the State Flowers Coloring Book. The whole idea is for people to de-stress and also create their own artwork. By publishing the book and putting herself out there, Katie is able to share the joy of plants with others.

“When I make something that I feel good about, I want to show the world and I want to share it with everyone.”
