FIELDTRIP: Private Residence in Virginia Beach
Of all the homes in this particular section of Virginia Beach, there’s one that sticks out for all the right reasons. A manicured lawn is only the frame for the beautifully created garden rooms surrounded by stacked stone walls that the owners built themselves. When you walk through this garden, you can see the love that’s been poured out by its creators.
It’s not just about the plants. There are numerous eclectic pieces to keep the eye moving through each garden section as you walk along the pebble paths throughout the property. From glass sculptures to a wrought iron arbor, a bright red Chinese bridge over a retention pond decorated with stone heads described to us by the owners as being in a “Zoom Meeting”, there’s no shortage of whimsy here.
The owners of this garden, Helen Junkin and Bernie Nichols, are both Master Gardeners. They work on the garden together themselves with weekly assistance from a friend. Helen shared that they are outside working almost every day.
“It is truly our passion and very much a labor of love.”
Special thanks to Helen and Bernie for sharing their garden with us.

While you won’t be able to just walk in and tour this particular garden, there are other opportunities to enjoy the garden scene in the area, including Red Wing Park.
Red Wing Park is a 97-acre park located off of General Booth Blvd. There are many recreational spaces here as well as picnic areas and a dog park, among other things. What we want to draw your attention to, though, is the Reba S. McClanan Fragrance Garden and the Miyazaki Japanese Garden. The park is open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week.
