FIELDTRIP: Bosco Parrasio

Just a few short miles south of Vatican City lies a private garden that dates back to the 18th century. Bosco Parrasio was donated to the Accademia dell’Arcadia, and was used by various writers and poets as a peaceful retreat.

Rather than let the sloped land get in the way, the garden takes advantage of this by consisting of three different levels, all surrounded by beautiful stone walls. Walking along the mossy cobblestone steps, one can imagine what it would’ve been like to go from the top level where poets practiced reciting their works to the bottom level where you can hear the soft trickling of the fountain and the soft chirping of birds from the trees.

A film by Camilla Fantinati.

Bosco Parrasio is private property and not open to the public without permission. However, there are plenty of other interesting places to visit nearby.

The Orto Botanico di Roma is within walking distance of Bosco Parrasio. Operated by the Sapienza University of Rome, this botanical garden contains more than 3,000 species of plants. They are open daily, free of charge.

And if you’re looking for even more scenic views, the Parco del Gianicolo overlooks the RIver Tiber and offers beautiful landscaping and a view of Rome.
