Maytee's Garden

Maydel Tuya describes her sister Maytee as “the lawyer of the plants.”
It’s an apt nickname since she went from being a lawyer in Cuba to working at a family nursery for decades, finally deciding to start her own garden center and landscape design company. She keeps that "lawyer of the plants" nickname by trying to save every plant that she can for her clients.
“I get to some client’s house and they say, ‘I want to knock down everything.’ And I say, ‘No, no…You cannot kill that plant. I’m going to make it nicer, prettier for you, and you’ll see we are going to save it.’”
While it was Maytee’s dream to open her own garden center, she could not have done so without the support of Maydel.
“She took the money from her savings, and she said, ‘Take it, go for your dreams.’”
Even though she’d be making more money practicing law, Maytee wouldn’t trade working with plants for anything. They are her true passion.
“I just want to be happy. I just want to wake up everyday talking about butterflies, flowers.”
